Computer Software - Davis, California, United States
Our mission is to grow communities around food and food around communities. There is a growing interest in restrengthening our connection to our food, getting back to the basics, understanding where our foods come from and even growing our own food. We also expect our phones and our computers to help us with every aspect of our lives and yet, computers and phones and the software running on them have not yet revolutionized gardening. It has not connected the dots of the gardeners in one city with those in another, or even the gardeners within their own small communities. It has not brought gardening into the social network age where information can be freely and quickly shared to improve people's experiences collectively and expand the celebration that should come with every harvest and every success in growing your own food. In addition, and possibly most importantly, it has not taken the large amount of human knowledge, academic and open source data about growing food and made it easily accessible and digestible by consumers. This is the problem we hope to solve. We want to bring gardening into the 21st century with all the data and tools that are at our generation's fingertips. We love books, but we don't think you should have to buy or dig through a hefty book to figure out what to grow and we don't think you should have to know your growing zone to know what or how to grow food. You should pick up your phone and it should be able to tell you what to grow and what people around you are growing, what they are doing with their home-grown foods and what awesome gardening successes they are celebrating. GivingGarden will use data from public data sets and crowd sourced data to give budding and professional gardeners immediate advice on what to grow. It will help them track their progress, connect to their community and ultimately increase their health and happiness. Good things to come in Summer 2017!
