Glac-UP is the first startup with the objective of safeguarding and enhancing the most beloved Alpine Glaciers, thanks to the involvement of individuals, firms and local communities. How? Financing the practice deemed by scientists as the best available solution to reduce melting in the short-term: covering them with special geotextile tarps during the warmer season. Every year these tarps save a layer of ice of 3.5 meter that otherwise would be lost. In order to make this activity economically sustainable, the "Glac-UP system" was developed, getting together individuals and firms by giving them the possibility to "adopt" a portion of the glacier, so that everyone can take part in this fight, saving glaciers one square meter at the time. Among the individuals, there are not only those who visit the Alps and are thus more sensitive to the problem, as they experience it in first person, but also all the other people around the world perceiving the dangerous situation of glaciers.Several companies have expressed their interest in investing for the safeguarding of glaciers: care for the environment and sustainability in their operations is not an option, they are imperatives to be included in their processes. Investing in a project like Glac-UP, where the positive impact on the environment is tangible in just a single season and the link with the local tourists guarantees visibility, is an opportunity that cannot be missed. Glac-UP forms partnerships with ski resorts and helps them preserving their touristic attractiveness and safeguarding the local communities, which found their wealth in the tourism connected to the glacier. Glac-UP works closely with the scientific community in order to maximise the positive impact of the project. Following the idea of circular economy, Glac-UP is working towards the goal of giving new life to geotextile tarps once they cannot protect the glaciers anymore.
