Hospital & Health Care - Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
Global Emergency Care Skills is an Irish voluntary, non-profit organisation with a core objective of providing emergency care training to doctors and nurses in countries with developing healthcare systems, thus reducing morbidity and mortality.Global Emergency Care Skills was founded in 2008 to provide emergency care and trauma skills training to doctors and nurses in developing countries where Emergency Medicine is a developing speciality. This is accomplished through the provision of a skills and simulation based course in trauma care, resuscitation skills and major incident management. The teaching faculty is composed of emergency medicine physicians from Ireland. One of the core philosophies of GECS is that no fees are charged to participants. GECS courses are run free of any charge. The organisation is funded through voluntary contributions from instructors and from fundraising activities in Ireland throughout the year.To date, Global Emergency Care Skills has run 8 courses in Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Ghana and Zambia. The next step in our plans to make a sustainable contribution to Emergency Medicine Training in Africa is to use local doctors as instructors on the course. These doctors have previously attended one of our courses and were identified as potential instructors. Over time the development of a local faculty will allow for the local provision of our course using our course material.
