Global Viral (GV) is an independent non-profit research organization focusing on innovative and disruptive research in Ecology, Biodiversity and Public Health. The organization has deep ties with universities, government labs and other institutes in California and seeks to advance research by fostering multidisciplinary collaboration, developing new technologies and training the next generation of scientists to undertake novel, high-risk high-reward projects. GV has a number of mature and developing projects in areas encompassing evolution and biodiversity (Boundaries of Life, Transitions), physics of biology (Program on Information, Complexity and Synthetic Biology), and urban health (Rapid Reporting framework). Current collaborations involve faculty from Stanford, Caltech, NASA/JPL, the Joint Genome Institute (JGI) and San Francisco State University.Major funding for GV's scientific activities comes from private foundations and government grants.
