Business leaders formed the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee (GIPC) during former Mayor John Barton's tenure in 1965. It is a private, non-profit, non-partisan organization. Throughout its 54-year history, GIPC has worked with mayors and their administrations to advance initiatives which improve the community. In recent years, GIPC has assisted in supporting the Eskenazi Hospital project, producing a study report for the Criminal Justice Facility, resolving an issue related to the city's public art initiative, and creating Plan 2020 as the city's way to honor Indianapolis' bicentennial and coordinate local planning efforts with broad community input. In past years, GIPC was the driving force behind UniGov, the White River State Park, the Indiana Convention Center, and other critical building blocks for today's vibrant Indianapolis.
