The Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra consists of young Greek musicians from all over Greece as well as Greek musicians living abroad. Its aim is to fill this important gap of our country, as with the corresponding tradition of the other European countries, and it is mainly aimed at the identification, guidance, education and promotion of talented young musicians in the symphonic and operatic repertoire under the guidance of internationally renowned soloists and principal of Greek and major European orchestras.Participation of young musicians in GYSO's programmes will be free of charge through the funding that GYSO will secure. Alongside the Orchestra's work, special attention will be given to educational programmes for the youth audience as well as to the young audience's easy access to its concerts, as it wishes to pass on to the new generation the quality and values that this kind of music stands for. GYSO aspires in this way to contribute to the creation of a music-loving flow and a musical platform for young musicians and the youth audience, thus enhancing the musical dialogue of the new generation. In its first year, the Orchestra consciously began with a small core of musicians selected from Greece and abroad, ages 18-30. An evident objective is expansion, population-wise and quality-wise, through auditions in various cities in Greece, which will be announced at the start of the second artistic period, 2018-2019, as well as the implementation of new programmes and activities for young artists. Its first artistic season is comprised of four concerts, led by the GYSO's founder and music director, Dionysis Grammenos, with the invaluable collaboration of the Greek National Opera, which will host the concerts in its new facilities at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. The funding of GYSO's operations, as well as the organization of the the four concerts in Greek National Opera, has been undertaken by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation.
