Renewables & Environment - Wageningen, Gelderland, Netherlands
We are a motivated, innovative, and diverse team of students participating in Wageningen University and Research's Greenhouse Challenge. Our vision is to encourage a sustainable urban lifestyle by showing the value of an innovative greenhouse. More and more people are moving to cities every year. As the global population continues to rise, this trend is not expected to change any time soon. In addition, cities are often forced to cope with a variety of sustainability issues unique to urban areas, including food security, air pollution, and the production of waste. Instead of seeing cities as a conglomerate of environmental problems, GreenWURks perceives them as areas filled with opportunities for innovation. We believe that the Bijlmerbajes is a perfect example of the capacity of most urban environments to adapt to environmental pressures and become sources of hope for the general public. The Bijlmerbajes has already adapted from a large prison to a center for refugees to call home. Now, we envision another transformation into a six-story urban greenhouse that honors the neighborhood's unique history while serving as an example for urban farmers in future generations. We want to create a greenhouse that promotes environmental awareness and encourages social cohesion. Our greenhouse will give the public the opportunity to learn about the way food is produced while demonstrating the potential for innovative technology to work symbiotically with natural processes. Furthermore, we envision a circular greenhouse. We plan to utilize zero-waste technologies, eco-efficiency and production efficiency to ensure the environmental, social, and financial sustainability of our greenhouse. By combining technologically and socially sustainable practices, we plan to enhance the quality of life of Amsterdam's inhabitants for years to come. Together, we will show that Green "WURks".
