Grenache Symposium is a grass-roots not-for-profit organisation opened to lovers of fine wine. All profits or losses are re-invested into the organisation. The First Grenache Symposium in June 2010 was inspired by wine legend Stephen Spurrier's suggestion to two Rhone Producers, Domaine de Mourchon and Chene Bleu, to hold a Grenache think-tank in the Southern Rhone. Over 250 top producers, journalists, and retailers from 23 countries bonded together with the resolve to celebrate Grenache/Garnacha/Cannonau, It enhances blends yet is capable on its own of producing great wines that age beautifully. An international non-profit association, free for anyone to join, was created to help promote "the grape you know, you just don't know it. For many years the unsung hero of the grape world, it is increasingly coming to the attention of consumers, who are learning to seek out wines that contain Grenache because they like the velvety, voluptuous mouthfeel that characterizes it. Dubbed the umami grape, as it often increases the "deliciousness" factor in blends, it now boasts a sizeable and growing following around the world, as witnessed by fans in the 30 countries that celebrated the first #GrenacheDay: enthusiasts came out of the shadows and started connecting with each other through the internet, creating a cult-like following in defence of this often-overlooked but wonderful grape.
