Upon discovering the lack of awareness for aphasia and in an effort to address the particular difficulty that they face with communication barriers, we launched our organization named Grise for Aphasia, or Grise for short. Our main initiative is currently a buddy system that pairs volunteers, such as high school and college students, with someone who has aphasia and their families. We are collaborating with organizations and different founders in order to bridge our buddy system with their existing events, such as their support groups. The buddy system provides an opportunity for people who have aphasia to connect with others in a friendly setting during a time of large isolation for them (currently remote, but can be in-person once appropriate), and volunteers can also assist them with their conversations and speech. It gives them a unique chance to interact with those from younger generations. These sessions are on a regular basis depending on the desires of a specific group, such as bi-weekly, and it can also bring together different families who have aphasia. In preparation, we are creating webinars and intuitive guides for volunteers so that they have the proper etiquette and have a plan for activities to do during their sessions.(Fun fact: "Grise" is pronounced as "Greez". Grise is French for gray, which is the same color as the awareness ribbon for aphasia.) Interested in joining us?
