Civic & Social Organization - Gansbaai, Western Cape, South Africa
The Football Foundation of South Africa (FFSA) was founded in 2008 to promote sports and social development in lesser reached areas of the country. Established by the British Premier League, the foundation aims to uplift communities by empowering individuals through accredited skills training and leadership opportunities, by promoting education, health, social integration and participation through sports. The FFSA is based in Gansbaai, a typical post-Apartheid South African rural town, located in the Western Cape. As a Barclays Spaces for Sports site and situated in the middle of three racially divided communities, it serves as the perfect catalyst for change. Through a holistic array of programs, FFSA successfully engages participants from communities that: have little access to education, are segregated, poor, and provide limited recreational and development opportunities. 500 different young people participate each week through daily sports trainings (soccer, netball, field hockey and athletics) and educational programs addressing HIV/AIDS, the environment and employability.
