35% of children studying in class 5 in India can't read class 2-level text. We believe that a key reason why we fail to achieve the educational outcomes we are capable of is that we do not make enough use of existing student learning data: the important knowledge is often stored in inaccessible databases stored on paper and locked away behind walls or buried under. The second, but equally important reason for such poor education outcomes is that the tools that schools currently use for teaching, learning, and assessment are outdated. The current form of education is around 200 years old. Tools that schools currently use were invented 200 years back when only 12% of the global population was literate. Now 86% of the world population is literate, but most schools still use the same tools. At Astra, we are building digital-first infrastructure for the entire schooling ecosystem that will help digitize students' learning data, automate repetitive non-value adding tasks for teachers and provide actionable insights on a child's academic progress. The goal of our work is to provide a world-class education for anyone, anywhere at the most affordable price-point.
