Who are GroupMappers?GroupMappers is a youth-based voluntary group consisting of experts and students from different backgrounds but with a single unanimous aim of collecting and integrating geospatial data for communicable disease control in Bangladesh.GroupMappers is affiliated with Mahidol-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU) and the Department of Disease Control, Directorate General of Health Services in Bangladesh. It is organized by MORU Epidemiology Department and is funded by a Public Engagement Bursary from the Wellcome Trust. Our Mission and Goals:The ultimate vision of GroupMappers proposes a set of concrete measures to create - √ an inclusive Geoinformatics-based platform; √ assembling a pool of highly skilled youths to generate data; which will be made publicly available online to maximize both the benefits of use and range of potential applications, such as aiding in crucial decision and policymaking.Previous projects of GroupMappers include monitoring and collecting spatial data of transmissible diseases like Rabies, Dengue, and Covid-19 etc. to aid in the policy making of government. Though the primary premise of the work of GroupMappers is Bangladesh, in the long run, the activities are to be expanded to other countries in South and South-east Asia as well. Our Evolution:Initially founded as a brainchild of our three founders, GroupMappers was formed with only 20 core members in the October of 2017. The main drive towards the formation was the lack of complete or accurate data on locations, boundaries, names and populations of communities that hindered the processes of sustainable solutions to environmental and societal challenges in the country. From the small group consisting of few members and a single pilot project, GroupMappers has now grown and expanded to a big family of over 100 members, each contributing in their own ways to collect and integrate geospatial data for a wider prospect in Bangladesh.
