The Guelph Film Festival inspires community engagement and appreciation of the arts by connecting people with stories of global reach and local relevance.One of the world's first documentary film festivals, the festival began as the Guelph International Film Festival in 1984 as a partnership between the Guelph International Research Centre (GIRC) and the University of Guelph's Centre for International Programs. In the eighties, the Festival ran for seven consecutive years drawing large audiences to its unique mix of international feature films and documentaries. After a 13-year hiatus, the festival was revived in 2003 by GIRC; a 30-year-old non-profit, non-governmental organization that educates Canadians about global issues and their local links.The Festival changed its name to the Guelph Festival of Moving Media in 2008. With its new name reflecting current documentary trends and the explosion of online media. In 2012 the festival became an independent non-profit organization and in 2014 the festival decided to return to its roots by rebranding itself as the Guelph Film Festival. This year the Festival will run November 10-18th, 2017 and will once again feature a selection of global documentaries, short videos, visiting directors, panel discussions plus programming for children. The programming focuses on social justice, the environment and our community.The Festival continues to screen outstanding documentaries addressing local and international issues. One of the unique aspects of this festival is the opportunity the audience is given to discuss media art and the impact of films and videos after each screening. Many films include a host speaker and discussion after the screening. A large proportion of the films are by donation, keeping the festival affordable for all.
