GWAYO believes in providing disadvantaged children the opportunity to succeed through tutoring and mentors. Their program provides kids from sixth to twelfth grade with a quiet and safe environment to do their homework. Their best practices focus on academic tutoring, recreational component, and mentoring. In addition to regular school work, the program also helps the high school kids prepare for the ACTs through online examinations. The program operates five times a week, with the staff picking-up and dropping-off the kids from school and home. The children go three days a week and have 15 minutes of recreational time for every study hour completed. After their study time, the children have access to arts and crafts, gym time, or game room equipment. Recreational time and mentoring are important, because they forge meaningful relationships and allow the kids a break from school work.
