Team HABARI is currently one of the finalists of the Global Biomimicry Design Challange. We provide a novel biomimetic solution in the form of an automated covering mechanism in order to protect crops from the adverse effects of climate change such as hail, frost, sunburn and heavy rain.HABARI aims to have an impact on farmers worldwide and should be adaptable to all kinds of crops. The first version, HABARI 1.0, will focus on tea plantations in Kenya and eastern Africa which suffer extremely from climate change induced night frost. Through intense research, Team HABARI found that no two plantations are alike, and they differ in their composition, altitude, degree of inclination etc. As you can imagine, one HABARI unit can't fit to all kinds of tea plantation. Therefore, a HABARI unit should ideally be available as an open source DIY-toolkit, which is customizable to the field of application and customer's needs. Since we want to be as locally attuned and as responsive to our surroundings as possible, the personalized DIY-Toolkit will be based on the materials and waste streams which are locally available and usable.
