Habitat Niagara's mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting homeownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. The organization is made up of a team of enthusiastic volunteers, community partners and staff, committed to transforming the lives of people in need of affordable housing. Habitat Niagara builds safe, decent, and affordable houses and provides no-down-payment, interest-free mortgages to qualifying families who would otherwise not be able to purchase their own homes. Habitat is not a giveaway program – we provide "a hand up not a hand out". Established locally in 1993, Habitat has constructed 40 homes in Niagara over the past 20 years. We are a member of Habitat for Humanity Canada, part of a worldwide network that spans close to 80 countries and has built or repaired over 600,000 homes, and serves another family every 5.5 minutes.Habitat for Humanity Niagara operates a retail outlet – the ReStore – selling donated new and used building materials, hardware, appliances, and home supplies. Revenue from the ReStore supports our overhead costs ensuring that every donated dollar goes directly to building new homes for families. The ReStore also operates an E-Waste program, In 2013, Habitat Niagara – through e-waste donations by people in our community – sent 326,240 pounds of e-waste to Sims. That's equal to 148 metric tonnes of waste diverted from landfills. In carbon footprint terms, that's equal to taking 85 cars off the road for one year.
