With all of the violence and crime in our communities it can be hard to know where to start to make a difference, but what if there was one thing that would attack a root cause of poverty?Study after study has shown that the lack of decent and affordable housing is a root cause of poverty worldwide. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area is attacking poverty here in our community one home, home family at a time, by using new homes and home repairs to drive family and community economic development. Here's how:• We take vacant land and build simple, decent and affordable homes, which supports the local tax base.• Materials are purchased from local building materials suppliers, sustaining jobs.• Local tradespeople provide key services helping them support their families.• Savings on utility bills thanks to Energy Star 3.0 standards help families stretch their budgets.• Investment in new homes (or in exterior repairs) encourages neighborhood improvements.• Stable housing positively impacts the health and productivity of our homebuyers. There are no give-aways in the Habitat program. Partners pay closing costs, put in "Sweat Equity" – in classes about homeownership and in working at Habitat's office, our ReStore and on other partner's homes. Volunteers provide most of the labor, while individuals and corporate donors provide money and materials. Partner family's zero interest mortgage payments help Habitat offer opportunities to more families. As part of its ministry, HFHGCA operates the ReStore, a building materials store featuring building materials and some home goods, all at 50-75% off retail. HFHGCA has been at work in Chattanooga since 1986, and is affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. HFHGCA provides Equal Housing Opportunity, Equal Employment Opportunity, and is a Drug Free Workplace.More information is available at www.habichatt.org.
