Habitat for Humanity of Westchester is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, the not-for-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976. HFH of Westchester is an organization of thousands of volunteers who seek to eliminate poverty and homelessness throughout Westchester County, and to make decent, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and public action. Habitat invites people from all walks of life and all religious and non-religious beliefs to build houses in partnership with families in need.Habitat for Humanity houses are affordable for local low-income families because there is no profit built into the sale price and no interest charged on the mortgage. HFH of Westchester acquires properties in a variety of ways, always working closely with local municipalities. In this way, the local municipality buys into the process of creating and maintaining affordable housing in their community.Since its incorporation as a non-profit in 1988, Habitat of Westchester has made great strides in its mission of building decent, safe, affordable housing across the county. Habitat has gained the trust of local governments and community residents alike by dedicating money, materials and muscle to accomplishing its goals in Westchester. Now in its 27th year, Habitat for Humanity of Westchester has completed 30 homes in Greenburgh, Mamaroneck, Mount Vernon, Ossining, Port Chester, White Plains, Yonkers, Larchmont, Bedford, Peekskill, and Yorktown and New Rochelle at a cost that local governments and private developers could never match. Building on this growing momentum in Westchester County, Habitat has set new goals: to secure the land rights, raise funding and begin construction on 25 new homes during this year. Our mission is to provide safe, quality, affordable, and green housing for lower-income families and individuals.
