Hair Trade is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls by connecting the dots locally and sustainably. Many girls have a natural resource – hair-- that is valuable but they are unaware of its potential. Hair Trade utilizes the value of donated hair provided by generous volunteers like you and girls themselves to provide an education for underprivileged and orphan girls in India.By gaining and education, girls will have opportunities beyond the traditional roles now forced upon them. All girls deserve to be happy, thrive and develop to their full potential!The ImpactEducation has the power to light up every aspect of a girl's life. Hair Trade believes all girls deserve the chance to escape poverty and thrive. Hair Trade is working with existing schools and orphanages to provide an education in a sustainable way to make a brighter future possible.Quick facts: • 8 million children in India are not in school • 35% of women in India are illiterate • Girls are more often discriminated against. Daughters rather than sons are forced to drop out of school and become child laborers to support their families • Without an education, girls are susceptible to child marriage, violence and even death.Proceeds from donated hair are directly applied to the education of disadvantaged girls (including books, uniforms, and school supplies). Hair Trade partners with reputable orphanages and schools in order to support and improve existing institutions rather than undertake expensive bricks-and-mortar projects.
