The Haliburton Highlands Outdoors Association (HHOA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1993. Supported by our active membership and volunteers, the HHOA is comprised of a diverse group of permanent and seasonal residents of the Haliburton Highlands who come from across the province of Ontario and the United States. This dynamic group of people is committed to the sustainable management of natural resources. In 1997, the HHOA entered into a partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters in the development and implementation of the Haliburton Lake Trout Project. The largest project undertaken by the HHOA, the Haliburton Fish Hatchery officially opened in April 2000 and since then has raised and stocked over 460,000 fish. An initiative driven by the community, local anglers, businesses and organizations, the hatchery specifically focuses on enhancing naturally reproducing lake trout populations by stocking local native lake trout strains in Crown water bodies. Raising the Haliburton Gold, the HHOA is helping to preserve one of the oldest and purest strains of lake trout in the world. The HHOA also hosts a number of other programs and projects including an archery program, resource centre, wetlands studies, lake access point clean-up, shoal-spawning and stream restoration, emergency deer feeding program, wildlife seeding program and public/youth education and outreach.
