Starting this 2020 growing season — Hardshell Labs, Inc (HSL) enters the commercial agricultural field with a new division offering pistachio orchard protection services to prevent losses in trees, lines and nuts from ravens and crows. The pilot acreage is in southern California; HSL plans to move its center of operations to the central valley and scale up for the 2021 season. Many birds are agricultural pests and the challenge of driving them from crop fields and orchards is a significant problem. In a survey conducted by HLS at the University of California, Division of Agriculture & Natural Resource's 2018 Pistachio Day proceedings, three out of four grower-respondents reported costly crop loss and irrigation system damage by pest birds, principally ravens.Hardshell Labs founder, Tim Shields is a respected field biologist with decades of experience managing watershed conservation, surveying habitats, studying the threat of extinction to desert tortoises by ravens, and developing technologies and practices to humanely haze and train birds away from targeted areas. He has formed a team of professionals to develop, market and scale the new company division to be able to provide protective services in pistachio and other future agricultural settings across California.Hardshell 's high technology approach to creating safe havens in orchards is silent, humane, completely toxin-free, and provided as a service contract to growers. The idea is to free our clients — pistachio growers — from the stress and costs of mitigating real losses suffered from the lack of an effective, modern approach. You can learn more about Hardshell's background and new approach to orchard security, as well as its conservation science work on the company's website.
