Nonprofit Organization Management - Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Harrison's Little Wings was established in 2011. After 2 years of supplying scrapbooks to assist in easing post loss grief, it became evident to the Founder Melanie McKenzie and the growing team at HLW that while there was support for families that lost their babies, there was still no visible or available support for mothers while they were enduring a extreme risk pregnancy, and/or those who have received a poor diagnosis. Over the last 5 years we have developed the focus of Harrison's Little Wings to specifically creating a safe and supportive space for extreme high risk mothers and their families. We have several support systems in place as we know only too well, that each family is unique and need varying levels or methods of support. It is up to each mother to choose what they feel they or their family would benefit from. They are welcome to receive any or all available support options.• Peer Support ProgramWe provide a safe supportive environment where women can talk about their experiences and share their stories in a relaxed informal format. This is an important support system for families during their pregnancy but extends to after the delivery of their baby.• Practical Support ProgramProviding practical services to families relieves the everyday pressures so the family can concentrate on what is important which is being there emotional, mentally and physically, as a family. Harrison's Little Wings assists with the costs of practical services such as house cleaning, yard maintenance, transport and/or parking fees. We can also help to create memories for families of their pregnancy and baby.• Precious Pregnancy PacksOur packs are an information source to give mothers and their families something tangible to read when they are at home in their safe space. It can be hard to process difficult news at medical appointments. We currently distribute throughout Queensland, and would like to distribute nationally.• Emergency Toiletry BagsWe provide Queensland Tertiary Hospitals Maternal Fetal Medicine Units with emergency toiletry bags for women who live out of catchment, who may have travelled hours to an appointment, to then be admitted unexpectedly due to complications. Friends and Family may not be able to deliver the basic essentials. Harrison's Little Wings mission is to ease the burden of Women who receive a poor or fatal diagnosis, no women should have to worry about hygiene essentials, • Online Social Media GroupsDue to group attendance being limited by physical location, we also have some social mediaclosed and private sites that women can access and chat to others in similar circumstance. This helps families who are not local to also receive peer support and make valuableconnections that may be otherwise difficult for women in regional areas.
