The Haus der Astronomie (HdA, House of Astronomy) is a unique centre for public relations and didactics of astronomy. The aim of the HdA is to bring the fascination of astronomy to the general public and to schools, and to promote the exchange of astronomers with each other and with colleagues in related fields of knowledge. To this end, we organise, for example, events for the general public, workshops for pupils and further training for teachers, support pupil research projects, are involved in exhibitions and in the visualisation of astronomical phenomena, and support representatives of the media in reporting on astronomical content. A full description of our activities is provided in the What we do section. Many of our activities take place in cooperation with other institutions and projects. The HdA was founded at the end of 2008 by the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and the Klaus Tschira Foundation gGmbH. The Klaus Tschira Foundation was the builder of the galaxy-shaped HdA building, which opened at the end of 2011, and also donated appropriate basic equipment. The Max Planck Society is responsible for the management of the building, which is carried out by the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA), on whose grounds the building was erected. Other partners are the University of Heidelberg and the City of Heidelberg.
