The Hawaii Music Awards was founded by Johnny Kai in 1996 to provide the recording artist in Hawaii the opportunity for the first time to receive recognition for their CDs in genres of music to included Rock, Jazz, Classical, Ska, Punk, Latin, Blues, Reggae, Jawaiian, Polynesian, Exotica, Country Western and others. Including music categories already recognized like Traditional Hawaiian music, Contemporary Hawaiian, etc. It was the first time a Governor and Mayor of Honolulu ever attended a music awards event in Hawaii. It was the first online interactive voting system developed for the internet.
