Hawaiian Hydropower is grounded in research done at Loko Iʻa, or Hawaiian fishponds. Loko Iʻa were developed over a thousand years ago by native Hawaiians as a way to efficiently and sustainably propagate seafood. The restoration of these fishponds protects endangered native species while generating food in a sustainable way. However, these labor-intensive restoration efforts have relied on car batteries for lighting and gasoline-powered equipment. The tidal currents that pass through these fishponds can be harnessed and converted into electricity using a hydropower generator, offering a sustainable alternative energy source for Hawaiian fishponds.
