Heath Care of Australia (HCoA) was founded by two entrepreneurs and floated as a trust in 1986. In 1991 Mayne Nickless became the majority shareholder and appointed Dr. Barry Catchlove to head its health care operations. During a period of unprecedented industry growth, the organisation grew to be Australia's largest private healthcare provider. In 2003 Mayne sold HCoA to a group of venture capitalists and the new company was called Affinity Health. Affinity continued to operate diagnostic services, general practices and an expanded pharmacology business. In mid 2005, Affinity agreed to sell the majority of the hospitals to Ramsay Health Care, with Healthscope Limited acquiring some remaining facilities.
