Technology enhanced learning (TEL) is the use of technology as part of a learning process. There is clear evidence that innovative educational technologies, such as e-Learning, simulation and m-Learning (mobile learning) provide unprecedented opportunities for health and social care students, trainees and educators to acquire, develop and maintain the essential knowledge, skills, values and behaviours needed for safe and effective patient care. The TEL ProgrammeThe Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) programme was established in 2013 with the vision that healthcare in the UK be underpinned by world-class education and training that is enhanced through innovation and the use of existing, evidence-based and emergent technologies and techniques. The TEL Hub After preliminary scoping and research, it was decided that one element of the programme would be the development and launch of a national TEL hub – an online portal and repository for TEL information and resources – initially in the areas of simulation, e-Learning and m-Learning (mobile learning). It is planned that the hub, which is being developed by Health Education England (HEE) and the Higher Education Academy (HEA), will be launched in 2015.The hub will be a go-to place for examples, guidance and TEL resources that are delivering major benefits in health education and training. It is also hoped that the hub will enable the share, spread and adoption of good practice and innovation across higher and postgraduate education, as well as promote innovation and creativity in the use of TEL to enhance learning and teaching. It is hoped that the hub will be used by all in healthcare and that it will be seen as a place to lodge, find, use, co-create, discuss and review the widest range of TEL resources and techniques.
