In 2009, the Klickitat County Health Department was awarded a $25,000 grant by the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO) to advance community leadership in the nation's effort to prevent chronic disease and related risk factors through a locally collaborative approach. This approach, called Action Communities for Health, Innovation and EnVironmental changE (ACHIEVE), is supported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s Healthy Communities Project. On February 23, 2009, a group of ordinary citizens came together to form Healthy People Alliance of Klickitat County (HPA). These were city and county health officials, city and county government, parks and recreation departments, local health-related coalitions, and other representatives from the school, business, health and community sectors who believed they could get more done to protect the health and well-being of Klickitat County residents by working together.Today, HPA's approach continues to campaign for county-wide improvements such as increasing access to safe locations for physical activity; preparing a worksite wellness toolkit for county-wide businesses and organizations; and reducing hunger, especially among children, through the growth of community and school gardens.
