Hospital & Health Care - Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa
The aim of the Healthy Talk project is to propose, empirically evaluate, and develop an appropriate strategy to improve communication curricula for health care professionals in South Africa.he South African National Strategic Plan on HIV, STIs and Tuberculosis 2012-2016 identifies the crucial importance of communication to reach key targets in the treatment of these diseases. Indeed, in South Africa the majority of health care consultations involve exchanges between professionals and patients with different linguistic, psychological and spiritual/religious backgrounds. This innovative interdisciplinary project (a) proposes and empirically evaluates strategies to overcome language and cultural barriers to improve adherence to treatment in these diseases in SA in close collaboration with key local actors, with a focus on rural health care centers, and (b) develops a strategy to implement these improved communication strategies in curricula for health care professionals and training of professionals in local clinics in order to secure the implementation of these strategies in teaching and medical practice in SA in the long run.
