HEARD is a private communications platform that helps schools streamline communication, build teacher-parent relationships, and engages families in student learning in a way that's easy, effective, and inclusive. Common Sense Education selected HEARD as a 2019 Top Pick, naming it one of the "Best Messaging Apps and Websites for Students, Teachers, and Parents" and "Apps and Websites for Improving Parent-Teacher Communication."Family engagement in education is crucial. Students whose parents are involved in their learning are more likely to stay in school longer, perform better in school, and enjoy school more. But ineffective communication, lack of teacher time and support, and barriers to positive teacher- parent relationships have made family engagement "one of the most powerful but neglected supports for children's learning and development." (Weiss, 2009). At HEARD, we aim to help change that. Accessible on any device and in any language, HEARD enables two-way communication not only between families and teachers, but among parents. It provides all members with democratic access to features — no hierarchy of controls that can eliminate bottlenecks to getting work done. HEARD facilitates collaboration on fundraising, volunteering, and events – activities that impact school success and where parents are often asked to be involved. The crowd-sourcing nature and democratic access of features gives teachers a classroom of parents to help answer questions and coordinate class needs.Most importantly, HEARD enables teachers to create a newsletter and share regular bite-sized glimpses into the day's learning as well as home-school connections -- ways parents can help their child and support the work teachers do in the classroom.
