Individual & Family Services - Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States
Hearing and Service Dogs of Minnesota has been helping people with disabilities through the use of assistance dogs since 1987. We work with individuals who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or physically disabled, pairing them with dogs specially trained to alert them to important sounds or assist them in the activities of daily living.Assistance dog clients have a wide range of disabilities. Mobility Assist Dogs are placed with people living with conditions including spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis (MS), muscular dystrophy (MD), cerebral palsy (CP), osteogenesis imperfecta, fibromyalgia, or severe arthritis. Diabetes Assist Dogs help alert their partners with Type I Diabetes to low blood sugar. Seizure Assist Dogs provide trained behaviors in response to a seizure. Autism Assist Dogs ensure the safety of a child with Autism by preventing bolting. They also provide a calming influence for the child. Our assistance dogs deliver personal dignity through the gifts of independence, freedom and peace of mind. Pairing our trained dogs with people with disabilities benefits our clients as well as their families, employers and communities. Whenever possible, we adopt dogs from local animal shelters to train for our programs.
