Henri Nouwen was a brilliant Dutch-born Catholic priest and pastor, psychologist, professor, and prolific author. He taught at the University of Notre Dame and the Divinity Schools of Yale and Harvard before becoming the pastor at L'Arche Daybreak in Toronto, where he served for the final decade of his life. Nouwen wrote and spoke with honesty and vulnerability about faith, spiritual formation, community, and other themes that still resonate today. He wrote 39 books during his lifetime, with about 1 million copies sold. Today, book sales have surpassed 7 million copies in more than 35 languages, and books drawn from Nouwen's writings and ideas continue to be published. Although he passed away unexpectedly in 1996, he is regarded as a spiritual master for our times. The Henri Nouwen Society was established in Canada in 2002. Its core purpose is to share Nouwen's spiritual vision so that people can be transformed by experiencing themselves as God's beloved. The spiritual content provided by the Henri Nouwen Society has never been more timely and relevant. In these anxious times, fuelled by the pandemic, war, conflict, climate change, and other concerns, our daily e-meditations (51k subscribers), podcast, and social media platforms have elicited many heartfelt expressions of appreciation and gratitude for Henri Nouwen's comforting and hope-filled words in these times.
