HCBC was formed to honor the example of the late David "Herkey" Biffle (1950-2018), by bringing about greater enthusiasm and sustainable improvement in the results for Cooke County's Premium Sale of Champions. A generous volunteer, classic auctioneer and jovial fundraiser for decades, Herkey implored his bidding audience to remember that their contributions "...were for the kids!" The overarching goal of HCBC is to ensure that the final bids, for every sale-eligible Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion, represent equitable premiums that reflect parity in relationship to similar projects.Recognition as a show champion is a goal and an amazing highlight for 4-H, FFA and FCCLA students. Depending on the division, there are sponsored banners, belt buckles and silver plated platters awarded. The grand finale is a walk through the auction ring to hear the unique sounds of the auctioneer's call for bids and the swift pounding of the gavel. While the bidding takes just a few minutes, the results should be an exhilarating reward for the effort of the students. HCBC's participation has contributed to increases in total show entries by 4-H, FFA and FCCLA members, which further reflects a heightened anticipation of success with possibility of equitable reward. Also observed is higher public attendance at the Premium Sale, more engaged buyers and higher overall sale totals. In 2019 and 2020 individual buyers approached HCBC before the Premium Sale to forge alliances, effectively stretching the pool of funds HCBC has collected. Positive feedback and general "buzz" heard after the Premium Sale is a reliable indicator that HCBC is making a palpable difference and enriching the life experience of youth exhibitors.
