The constant reduction in lobster landings in the Southern Gulf of Saint-Lawrence and Northumberland Strait incited the Maritime Fishermen's Union (MFU) to put in place Homarus Inc., a non-profit company, which has worked since 2002 at the development of strategies for enhancing the resource as well as the socio-economic viability of the fishery for this general area. Based in Shediac, NB, Homarus has since been working on several research and development axes, such as (1) resource enhancement (lobster stocking program and artificial reefs), (2) lobster resource monitoring programs, (3) ecosystem impacts research (contaminants, climate change, etc.), (4) economic viability (artificial bait, lobster quality) and (5) fishermen and general public education with the Homarus Eco-Centre.
