Home of Hope is situated in the middle of Sri Lanka in Alutwatta, near Kandy. The village is on 12.5 hectares of land. It is not just a house for orphaned children – it's their home. Forget the images of crying children living in large, overcrowded dormitories… Home of Hope is a true village made up of different houses where small groups of children live under the supervision of their ‘house moms'. We strongly believe, due to its unique approach to caring for children, that Home of Hope will serve as an example for future orphanages everywhere. The progress children make at Home of Hope is enormous and very rewarding. When they arrive they are often scared and traumatised by their past – you only have to look into their eyes to see their pain. This is also evident by their frequent nightmares. After a while you will see huge changes – their confidence grows and big smiles soon replace tears of sadness. But most of all: they learn how to become children again. Therefore, Our motto is: You cannot change the whole world, but you can change the world of a child. Home of Hope, originally started in 2001 as a former chicken farm turned children's home, is now really a village for children. 85 children now call it their home. They are of Sinhala and Tamil origin. At first, most children came from war zones in the north and east part of the country. It prevented them from being recruited as child soldiers in the ethnic conflict. Since the end of the war in 2009, the children coming to Home of Hope had no shelter and were often put in prisons by the government as a way of dealing with the problem. Needless to say, the children were confronted with horrific circumstances. Abuse and violence were often the rule rather than the exception. Home of Hope is no traditional orphanage. Our approach is characterized by loving guidance and proper education for our children to make them good citizens who can stand on their own feet. They deserve a bright future.
