Hoot has built an entirely new solution that eliminates the CDN for live streaming. Using RTMP (Real Time Media Protocol) as the protocol for streaming the video from broadcaster to the backend server and transferring the live video from backend server to nearly unlimited viewers. Compared to HLS, which is a stateless protocol, RTMP requires a persistent connection between the server and both the broadcaster and player enabling users to consume live video with lowest possible latency. In addition, the backend server continuously pushes the available video frames to the player. Video frames with a time resolution as low as 32ms are captured and pushed to the player in near real-time. The streaming server utilizes low-level performant languages C and C++, focusing on scalability and low latency using off-the-shelf commodity low cost hardware. The result is a proprietary architecture that is scalable theoretically to unlimited live-streaming viewers with the lowest known latency using commodity hardware and low resource requirements.
