H.O.P.E. Was Here is a 2014 documentary film directed and edited by Mark Denega and produced by Mark Denega, Mike Lyons, Travis Kumph and Justin Thompson. It was inspired by the book 'Peace of Me: Reflections of Service and Self-Discovery' by Travis Kumph. The film was produced in partnership with Malibu-based documentary incubator Creative Visions Foundation and was funded in part by a grant from Travel2change.Premise:Affluent, Boston-based college students embark on a weeklong goodwill trip to the slums of Lima, Peru in this story about the phenomenon of volunteer vacations—also known as "voluntourism" or service trips—which have fast become both a hallmark of global citizenry and a point of controversy for socially conscious millenials. In their attempts to teach English and work with developmentally disabled children, the students must confront the reality of their work and whether or not it's creating positive change. A fresh take on a classic moral dilemma, H.O.P.E. WAS HERE deals with the intersection of privilege and poverty by asking what it really means to help people.Awards and screenings:H.O.P.E. Was Here won the Bronze Palm Award at the Mexico International Film Festival, the Award of Merit at The Indie Fest, and was nominated for Best Original Score in a Documentary at the 2014 Hollywood Music in Media Award in Los Angeles. The film has screened to volunteer programs at universities across the Unites States, including Boston University, James Madison University, and the University of Pittsburgh.
