Primary/secondary Education - Washington, Washington, United States
A major problem that continues to trouble the U.S. education system is the disproportionately high number of behavioral referrals and suspensions of minority boys each year, even when schools may be majority white or majority female. Racial disparities in school discipline are quite common and sends a message that boys of color, in particular, are the issue and should be feared. However, these boys typically do not have the coping skills necessary to address the root of their behavior/frustration. This is a multi-faceted issue that must be addressed with the combination of several methods and all of those affected,(including students, teachers/staff, families, and community members). Hopeful HoriSONS (est. 2018) provides academic and social-emotional support for students, mentorship programming, one-of-a-kind field trip opportunities, community service events, and anti-bias/Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training for their teachers/staff members.
