HMI – THE HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE OF PORTUGAL HMI is a joint venture among the Tourism of Portugal (a Government organization), ISCTE – Lisbon University Institute, University of Algarve and Escola Superior de Hotelaria e Turismo do Estoril (a higher education hotel and tourism school). It was launched on 27th September 2008 in a high profile event that would set the tone for the level and focus of future activities. The partners One important outcome was the understanding that such an Institute would have more chances of success if it leveraged on two pillars: (i) a "supra" body with strong networking resources, a stake and knowledge of the industry such as "Turismo de Portugal" (a Government organization); and (ii) existing critical mass in the academia both on the industry and on transversal key areas such as economics, business management, entrepreneurship and innovation, sociology, anthropology and other soft areas. Therefore a not so usual association was formed between a Government organization and three geographically dispersed higher education institutions with a strong expertise in the above areas and a sincere will and enthusiasm to make the project successful. They are: ISCTE – Lisbon University Institute; Escola Superior de Hotelaria e Turismo do Estoril (a leading hotel and tourism 2 higher education school); and University of Algarve. The partners will guarantee resources including the supply of talent and will offer the basis on which HMI can be built. The value proposition HMI aims at providing Advanced Education and Training and at undertaking Applied Research for the continuous upgrade and development of hospitality and tourism in close contact with the industry, having in mind sector and overall trends and keeping a par and ahead of those trends. The working language is English.
