Hownam Studio creates contemporary sculptural furniture and art in Scotland from some of the worlds rarest materials. The heritage of our collection extends back over millennia, materials such as our Scottish walnut and ancient yew are some of the last remaining, and historically significant.Completed with detail, precision and passion. The beauty of each work lies not in uniformity but in the history of each piece of wood, its individual story and its inherent perfect imperfection.Black Collection The inaugural works from Hownam Studio comprise the Black Collection, a study in a northern European aesthetic. The collection primarily explores black from dark blue to silver, to purple hues and the midnight black of rain-washed trees and stones. At first glance, the sculptural forms appear to be made up of solid colour. If you look closely, it becomes clear that the blacks are composed of many shades. The depth and pattern is given greater expression and natural complexity from the inherent character within the wood. Formed over hundreds of years, the myriad effects that time has placed within it creates huge variation in every inch, taking you further to access the infinite. Colour, pattern and shadow change during the day. At distance the form is accentuated by hand worked surfaces that captivate and explore the interface with light. As you approach waves of subtle hues and shades appear across the surfaces, edges and facets, creating depth, leading the mind to contemplate. The collection nurtures the highest aspirations within functional form, to transcend the mundane and to provide a focus for meditative thought.
