Human Automation Teaming Solutions (HATS) Inc., a Los Angeles, California startup company, was founded in June 2014. HATS' innovation facilitates teamwork between human and machines by leveraging the unique strengths of the team members, and by engendering appropriate trust through bi-directional transparency.Developed for NASA, our innovations were developed to help NASA researchers address challenges in integrating drones into the national airspace system. Our innovations consist of patent-pending technologies that incorporate novel approaches to dynamically allocating functions between automation and human. This dynamic allocation is critical to creating a flexible system that helps a single human oversee many semi-autonomous vehicles. Currently we are partnering with stakeholders (landfill operators, enforcement agencies, residents, academia, and Amazon Web Services) and utilizing these technologies to revolutionize the monitoring and mitigation of landfill methane gas emissions, one of the main greenhouse gases contributing to climate change, as well as a source of noxious odors. Using a systems engineering approach, we are developing and testing a real-time environmental monitoring system called Consoar. Consoar allows an onsite operator to team with automation to deploy a scalable number of semi-autonomous unmanned air and ground vehicles to collect data on methane emissions and to view visualizations of this data in real time. These visualizations include alerts of newly discovered gas leaks and odors as well as a range of actionable information for policy making and operational improvements. Our goal is to reduce landfill methane emission by 80% at sites where the system is deployed and to do so at an affordable cost. Future potential applications of our technologies include management of autonomous cars, home automation, and many others.
