Hurtado Family Vineyards will soon be celebrating one hundred years of history. The family has been linked to winemaking since 1916, when Don José María Hurtado, a visionary and widely respected farmer, acquired the Los Maquis Estate in Palmilla. This was formerly part of the extensive Hacienda El Huique Estate. The family became the first in the Colchagua area to incorporate French grape varieties into its vineyards. Another important milestone was the construction of a huge cellar with a capacity to hold 1 million liters of wine. This was built by Don Ignacio Hurtado during the 1920's and was one of the first cellars of reinforced concrete in the country, making an important mark with its avant guarde technology, efficiency and celebrated architectural design. For four generations now, the strong bond between the Hurtado Family and winemaking has been preserved. The family vineyards are some of the oldest and most prestigious in the Colchagua Valley, presently grouping together Viña MAQUIS and CALCU Vineyards. Both these vineyards faithfully represent the terroir of their truly privileged location for the elaboration of quality, world-class wine.
