MANDATEOur mandate at Héliographe is to present photography projects dealing with societal, philosophical and artistic issues. We focus on the promotion of emerging artists and art collectives based in Canada. In order to push further the dialogue of today's contemporary issues in photography, we also invite art critics and curators to share their analysis through our platform.HISTORYHéliographe is an initiative of the artists Cécile Gualde and Jean-Sébastien Scraire.Since both always had the desire to promote emerging artists in photography, in the year of 2016, they decided to work on a project that would become Héliographe. Following this, they met on a daily basis to define the different aspect of the project and they released their first artist call for emerging art photographers based in Canada in November 2016.The first project was released and presented on their website in March 2017.ORIGINFrom the words ''Hélio'' and ''Graphie'', meaning ''Sun'' and ''writing'', the Heliograph is a tool used in meteorology that records the sunshine on a daily basis. In 1851, the ''Société héliographique'' is born in France and includes the 5 photographers of ''la Mission Héliographique'', first public and collective order in the history of photography. The use of the name itself is impregnated with historical discoveries since the beginning of the medium.
