I feel a tremendous responsibility whenever I teach teens, because my teaching them how to write effectively necessitates my also teaching them how to think effectively, which itself necessitates my teaching them how to win the hearts and minds of other people, and your teen's fitness in those three areas will decide your teen's entire future. My responsibility feels even greater when I consider how our society is flagrantly failing to teach teens how they can and should build their character. In a world that's changing exponentially, directly before we kick teens out the door on their own, we're stabbing them in the back: we tell them that an educated mind spawns success, which is the truth, yet implicitly we teach them that a mind is educated once it retains a sanctioned set of facts, which is a lie, because a true education teaches a person not only how to store facts, but also how to organize, synthesize, and—most importantly—audit those facts. We owe our teens a lot more than we're giving them, and our failure to do so both grieves and inspires me as an educator.
