Hospital & Health Care - Birmingham, England, United Kingdom
Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) - the most common liver condition specific to pregnancy - is still causing stillbirth. ICP Support has helped to reduce the number of stillbirths that have occurred, and our mission is to prevent this devastating outcome happening to any more families. We also want to reduce the number of babies who have to be admitted to the neonatal care unit of hospitals because they have had to be born early because of ICP.We will achieve this because we are unique in that researchers working in the field of ICP are also working within our charity. This means that the information we share with the medical profession and the general public, via our website and social media platforms, is based on the most up-to-date research and thinking that there is on what should happen in an ICP pregnancy. This enables ICP families, working together with their healthcare professionals, to receive the best care.ICP Support was founded (as OC Support) in 1991 by Jenny Chambers, who suffered two stillbirths before being diagnosed with ICP. Jenny's aim was to provide support and information for women who thought they might have the condition and wanted to know more about it. Jenny's other aims were to raise awareness of the condition and promote research into it. These aims still underpin what is now the registered charity (since 2012) ICP Support.Since then we have expanded into an organisation with an international reach that provides support via various Facebook groups, with a dedicated Support and Information Line offering help to anyone affected by ICP. We also offer training to hospitals wishing to improve their knowledge of this complex condition. We're a tiny charity but we are growing. If you'd like us to come and talk to you more about ICP, or you feel you can help us to grow so that we reach even more women and prevent further stillbirths, please email us at: admin@icpsupport.org.
