Africa is a continent with a shortage of haematologists, haematological support, advocacy and services. As the only dedicated Haematological Services NGO in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Igazi Foundation lobbies Governments to improve existing blood services and facilities for patients, their families and health professionals. Born in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, in 2010, the Foundation has become internationally recognised as the champion of Haematology issues in the broader struggle for better health services in Africa.The Foundation is a volunteer organisation committed to making Haematology an important part of national health agendas. Recent successes include the establishment of a Stem Cell unit, a Paediatric Haematology unit and a Nurses training centre, all in Port Elizabeth, as well as a refurbished Chemotherapy room in Durban. Igazi's accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training programmes have trained 1400 Doctors, Nurses and Physicians to date.The Foundation is a member of the South African Presidential Health Summit Patient Advocacy Group in acknowledgement of their contribution to Blood Health on the continent. They are currently the Provincial Representatives of the Patient User Network In the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu-Natal, as a member of the Community Constituency Covid-19 Front. This is facilitating Patients Group responses and action in the fight against the Covid-19 virus.
