Biotechnology - Nantes, Pays de la Loire, France
This very year, the first IGEM team of the University of Nantes has arisen. The International Genetically Engineered Machine competition is a worldwide competition of synthetic biology that takes place every year in Boston, USA. Initiated by Randy Rettberg in 2004, the aim is to genetically modify a living organism in order for it to acquire a new property (fluorescence for instance) or to produce a protein of interest (a lacking protein which is responsible for a disease for example). This competition is open to students from the whole world. During the year, teams are working on a project they designed themselves, seeking funds, carrying out experiments, interpreting their results and communicating around their project in different ways. They may also organize events to gain exposure and popularize synthetic biology. In October, they present their work during a four-day event called the Giant Jamboree. This work is then evaluated by a jury composed of professionals who will award prizes according to a set criteria. The 2019 ‘IGEM Nantes' team is an undergraduate team composed of fifteen motivated students coming from diverse scientific backgrounds: biology, computer science, mathematics. We are willing to create a biological system that will provide an answer to a global problem. This project requires a lot of personal investment from IGEMers, who are supported by competent supervisors within the University and benevolent advisors.
