As a Seismic Expert and Geotechnical Engineer, I help underground mines navigate the potential risks posed by large seismic events. As many miners know, the occurrence of seismic events may lead to severe consequences such as multiple fatalities, prolonged mine shut down or mine closure. Ensuring safety and avoiding costly consequences through understanding and managing seismic hazard is complex and goes beyond the experience and understanding of most geotechnical engineers. This is especially important since the proactive management of seismic risk is critical to operate effectively under these conditions,Over the past 10+ years I have been involved in some of the world's deepest (Including the world's deepest) and most seismically hazardous mines. In my roles as a mine seismologist, geotechnical engineer, academic and outside consultant I have learned a tremendous amount about the impact of these roles on the mining process. Working as a Research Engineer in Geotechnical Engineering and Seismology for the ACG (Australian Centre for Geomechanics), I was able to instigate overall industry improvement in focused mine seismology research and methods. This includes visiting mine sites across the world to audit and train their staff in order to achieve positive outcomes.At IGM Geotechnical we have both the skills and understanding to help seismically active mines address the concern of seismicity. Our staff have practied as geotechnical engineers, which means that we focus on giving engineering controls and advice.
