Food insecurity is defined as the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 1 in 10 families experienced food insecurity. An estimated 1 in 4 American families are now struggling with food insecurity. In the early months of the pandemic, seven concerned alumni of the Columbia University Institute of Human Nutrition Masters in Human Nutrition program met to coordinate food insecurity relief efforts among current students and alumni, and with that, The IHN Food Coop was born. The IHN Food Coop is a partnership network dedicated to connecting volunteers and donors with well vetted organizations working in the New York City area and beyond to provide relief to food insecure communities. We aim to tackle the racial and social injustice that we see in the disproportionate access to nutritious food in underserved communities. Our hope is that this collective effort will lead to sustainable campaigns of support that grow over time even as COVID-19 induced anxieties subside. Together, our combined donations of time, money, and increased awareness can help lead us to a brighter future.
