Organic farming, with its better economic returns and environmental outcomes, offers major opportunities for India's poor farmers and marginal rural communities.Ikaki Bagh was established in 2014, on the outskirts of Jaipur in Rajasthan, as a model organic farm to demonstrate and promote these opportunities. It has registered organic status. http://ikaki.in/bagh/ The vision and development of Ikaki Bagh is led by local entrepreneur and philanthropist, Mr Jaideo Rathore with the support of a local and international advisory group. Mr Rathore is also Managing Director of Ikaki Niwas, the multi-award winning boutique hotel in Jaipur http://ikaki.in/The farm uses systems and practices that are affordable for marginal farmers in the district. The long-term vision is to see all small, scale farms in the district convert to organic.Ikaki Bagh also focuses on engagement with local Meena and Berwa communities to improve conditions and infrastructure in local schools and villages. Meena and Berwa people (historically discriminated as members as ‘Untouchables') experience entrenched social disadvantage to this day. While the Meena and Berwa communities have a history in small-scale agriculture, the concepts and practices of organic farming have been lost under the pressure of the industrialisation of agriculture over the last one hundred and fifty years.Tourists are welcome to visit Ikaki Bagh and experience a different side of India to the popular tourism highlights. This includes the opportunity to stay overnight on the farm, visit the local villages and schools and enjoy Indian rural life, customs and nature. Income from visits is re-invested in the ongoing development of Ikaki Bagh and immediately supports the local primary school and Jhinjha village.Opportunities are available for people with skills, experience and goodwill to work as volunteers to support this social enterprise project or to donate financially to individual projects.
